Welcome to the Kosher Burrito

Hey, what the heck is a Kosher Burrito anyway?

What happens when you cross a crazy Mexican guy in living in San Diego with a high strung Jewish dude stomping around Las Vegas? Well nothing much really happens however they might get a brainy idea to start their own website and call it the Kosher Burrito. The Kosher Burrito is basically our webspace which we primarily dedicate to our love of motorcycles, our motorcycle trip reports, and our fascination with the adventure riding phenomenon.

Motorcycling has a rich history dating back pretty much since the invention of the internal combustion engine. One of the more recent styles of motorcycle riding has to do with the fusion of street bikes combined with dual purpose bikes creating what is commonly known as adventure riding. What caused this movement? Did some forward thinking street rider see a desirable mountain top and ride his street-only bike off the road? Maybe a seasoned dirt rider decided he wanted to ride his dirt bike home after exploring the trails? Many have called the old black and white photographs of the rag-tag crew riding their Harley Davidson over mountain trails the fathers of adventure riding. Either way the important fact is adventure riding has been discovered and it's a whole hell of a lotta fun.

What drove Ted Simon to travel around the world is a question I believe he is still answering. However the moment he decided to embark on his trip around the world he knew immediately it would be aboard a motorcycle. The embodiment of Adventure Riding I believe is an inherent passion we share. Some people learn to love riding a motorcycle, but I also believe it is hardwired into the very being of others. Those that defy logic or economic principles and spend way too much on new bike. Those that ride 500 miles through wind and rain only to sleep on the cold hard ground. Those that actually enjoy the taste of mediocre cafe food in some long forgotten town in Northern Nevada. They are the adventurers, the modern day frontiersman, and timeless explorers.

We are them, they are us.

Our Adventures

Where we have been, where we are going...

In 2006 we found Yellowstone

2006 was a big year for us. Izzy and I have been riding motorcycles spiritually since the day we were born. However it wasn't until 2006 that we took our first true adventure into the unknown. I know that may sound over dramatic, after all we were going to Wyoming not the Arctic Circle. However, to pack up enough belongings to live on the road for a week and carry them on a motorcycle is no easy task. Especially when one of those motorcycles is a Ducati Monster. Anyway we embarked for a 10-day 2500 mile trip and I believe it was responsible for every adventure we have ever taken since then, and everyone we will take in the future.

In 2007 we discovered Banff

After our trip to Yellowstone Izzy and I were discussing the next adventure we would like to take. What would any two reputable and sane adventurers do after riding 2500 miles in 10 days? Ride farther of course! In 2007 we plotted a course for Banff National Park in Alberta Canada and almost immediately we were off. This trip was very different than our 2006 trip however it of course shared many similarities.

In 2008 we will find fish

2008 is almost over I know. But Izzy and I know we cannot have such a huge gaping hole in our trip reports so we need to get off our rumps and plan something. A true adventure does not have to be 10,000 miles and 30 days. A true adventure can be a short ride away in a local campground, it can be a long weekend riding the coast, or it can be what I hope is a 3-day weekend exploring Utah and maybe even finding some fish.

In 2009 preparations will be made

The jury is still out on what we will be doing in 2009 (mostly because 2009 has not arrived yet). However with our month long 2010 trip planned Izzy and I have already resigned ourselves to the fact we may not be able to take off for a week long ride during the year. I will hopefully be taking several long weekend trips to test out the durability and performance of my F800GS so expect to see at least some action in 2009 from the Kosher Burrito crew.

Even if I have to ride to San Diego and drag poor Izzy out of the house :)

In 2010 the Adventure begins

All adventure riders eventually consider Alaska. What is not to like about Alaska anyway? Sure its winters are insanely frigid, they have more bugs than a Louisiana bayou, and of course it's roughly 5000 miles away over some of the most questionable roads on this continent, and that is the fun part. Seriously though, if you look at the routes Izzy and I have chosen over the past few years we have been getting progressively closer to Alaska each trip. Our packing methods have improved, our riding skills honed, and our endurance in the saddle has multiplied exponentially. If you look at illogically, it's almost as if we have been subconsciously preparing for this trip since we first left for Yellowstone. Alaska is the pinnacle of adventure riding in North America. It is not an easy place to reach and the trip can be plagued with logistical or natural obstacles. Either way, Izzy and I have realized that Alaska is not only a necessary adventure in our growing catalog of memories, it is also a turning point. For us, Alaska is the ultimate adventure in North America and any reputable adventurers such as Izzy and I owe it to ourselves to experience it first hand.
